Melawat (Visitation in Malay Language) explores centuries old practice of shrine veneration in pre-islamic malay folk traditions. A practice that honors the spirits of the land, a constant renewal and recognition of the often symbiotic relationship that human inhabitants have with the environment, plants, animals and other unseen beings. Inspired by local shrine architecture of the region, inspired and imagined ritual objects, the body of work was developed in prior to, and as part of a visual research process which gave rise to Nazerul’s body of work entitled This Is Where I Hope You’ll Dwell.
